Maybe....?

HAIL CAESAR
In the theater
As the credits rolled

B: That was NOT worth it.
Me: Are you kidding me?
B: Definite renter.
Me: What? Are you kidding? COEN BROTHERS.
B: We didn't even pay matinee price for this. I'm mad!
Me: You laughed your ASS off when...
B: Yeah, I know.
Me: AND when they said...
B: That, too.
Me: And what about...
B: But funny scenes don't make a funny movie.

I don't know what to tell you. Some segments would have completely missed B (the Hollywood movie system/power of the press in that day, pithy debates over WAIT I won't spoil that either) but I have to admit it wasn't the greatest Coen film ever. Then again, which one is? Depends on who you ask. That's up for debate. Perhaps a pat ending would have helped? Yeah, right. As if The Great Lebowski had an 'ending.'

Me: Okay fine. Perhaps it wasn't a shot-for-shot, line-for-line masterpiece.
B: I'll say.
Me: Like Raising Arizona.
B: Hold on WHAT??? That wasn't even that good.
Me: NOW you've lost your mind.

To me? Raising Arizona was better than anything, Hudsucker Proxy was better than Lebowski which had killer moments but wasn't a whole movie and Fargo just wasn't my thing. Sorry.

See what I mean?

I want to see Hail Caesar because it looks so stylistically interesting.

Feelings on Oh Brother, Where Art Thou? Love? Hate? Indifferent?

[identity profile] newlifeinstpaul.livejournal.com 2016-02-10 03:26 pm (UTC)(link)
Feh. Borderline offended. Nearly forgot it was in the Coen mix.
I'd rate Caesar above it.

Is that high on your list because of Clooney?
In that case, I'd rate this WAY over Brother.

But I might need your Top five Coens for context.

Let's see. Not exactly a ranking, but...:

Blood Simple: Liked a lot
Hudsucker Proxy: Haven't seen
Fargo: Indifferent-to-like (overrated, but okay)
Big Lebowski: Haven't seen all of it (fell asleep and now Derrick won't let me watch it again since he just saw it)
Inside Llewyn Davis: Eh. Better than I thought it was going to be
Serious Man: Haven't seen
Barton Fink: Haven't seen
Burn After Reading: Liked
Intolerable Cruelty: Haven't seen
Ladykillers: Turned off after about 10 minutes
The Man Who Wasn't There: Barely remember, but I thought I liked it
No Country for Old Men: Liked
Miller's Crossing: Haven't seen
O Brother: Indifferent-to-like
Raising Arizona: Liked
True Grit: Liked

I have no feelings either way about George Clooney. I believe I liked him best in Ocean's Eleven and ER.

Guess who I am: Oh gosh golly I dun really know, how 'bout a COMPREHENSIVE LIST of every Coen film ever...
Where is your HUSBAND?

I completely forgot 'Burn after Reading' was a Coen movie. Tough to say which was better between that film and 'Caesar.'
Neither was perfect...? But when they made me laugh, they made me laugh hard.

Oh hush you! I had to list them all out to remember which ones were Coen movies and whether I had actually seen them. :p

But funny scenes don't make a funny movie

Very good point there.

Aw, don't listen to her.
She doesn't even HAVE a Favorite Coen Brothers Movie.

Raising Arizona, O Brother Where Art Thou, Hudsucker Proxy, and Big Lebowski are movies I can watch over and over again. They get better and funnier each time. The rapid fire dialog in Brother and Hudsucker is like a comedy on speed.

I'm curious about Hail Caesar, but I might wait for it to come out on Netflix.

Yeah.
Haven't seen it yet myself.
I haven't forgiven them for "burn before reading".

But, I agree RA>HP>BL.
And, Fargo...
Yeah. Not my think either.

Oh man... it's been years since I've seen Raising Arizona! *Checking to see if it's on Netflix* No... boo!

I agree, funny scenes does NOT make a funny movie. I hate when the previews show all of the 5 funny parts, and that's all that's in the movie!
