This comment-that-blew-up-into-a-post comes to you courtesy of [livejournal.com profile] pen_grunt, who will inspire yet another rather disturbing post in the near future. She knows why

Prince was by FAR the moast shocking and saddening loss of the year to me. He was that Dirty Lil' Weird Man whose filthy music I'd play at low volumes, hoping the parents wouldn't walk in my room and catch me. The Lil Fella who could somehow inexplicably date any and every woman he pleased via methods we'll never quite understand.

The Time's first album dropped when I first got to high school; Purple Rain between my junior and senior year. Radio stations would feature all the B-sides. He was the singer for whom Electifying Mojo (remember when radio deejays were Huge Big Deals? No? Won't try to explain) would play naught but a SINGLE song over and over and over for 45 minutes while no one complained. But come on, it was 'Erotic City' so there ya go.

I grew up in both a time and a place when Prince, any side band he'd slap together (the Time, Van-Polonia Six, The Family, even Madhouse) were the center of the Universe. It was the soundtrack of growing up and independence and Doing Whatcha Wanna Do, not what your mommy tells you. Hell, Prince himself would leave Minnesota on his birthday to perform concerts in the D instead cuz he KNEW damn well where his real people lived.

I bought Parade and Around the World in A Day and broke my first CD player trying to move the heads repeatedly to The Ballad of Dorothy Parker (see, Lovesexy didn't have tracks) and actually went to the THEATAH for Graffiti Bridge (why? WHY? Little man was sorely testing my patience) and even Emancipation. By 'Black Sweat' he'd lost me tho.

Now ya got me all sad. I'ma go listen to that song about buckets of squirrel meat on The Black Album again.
