Why on EARTH would someone lie about something like that, and invite the wrath of the world, not to metion sure and horrible abuse in prison, upon him??

To be noticed, notorious, have a 'name' for yourself--provided you were sufficiently delusional. Believe me, people lie about things like this all the time.

But I don't see that in this case. Delusional folks tend to work with grandiosity like an artist with a canvas. There's messages on the radio and television as celebrities, government agencies and very powerful people are all somehow deeply concerned with THEM and only them. Meanwhile this guy is working vigorously to justify and minimize what he did. It flies right in the face of the typical delusional MO.
